Project Overview:
- Base preparations for new Woolworths floor area of 5000m2 to a tolerance of +0 / -10mm
- Base preparation of new loading dock and heavy-duty slab areas
- Backfilling 4 metre retaining walls off Wellington Road with geogrid and cement treated rubble
- Preparing and pouring concrete kerbing, spoon drains and alike over a distance of 1000 metres
- Constructing over 400 metres on internal sealed roads with compaction to AS 3798 and asphalt to AS 2150
- Base preparation of new heavy-duty and light-duty asphalt carparks of 13,000m2
- Placing over 10,000 tonnes of quarry grade road base and laying over 800 tonnes of asphalt hotmix
- Working in a staged manner to ensure site maintains access
- Working to Woolworths time constraints and mandatory grand opening date
Scope of Work:
Woolworths Floor Area:
- Kalkan had to prepare the base for the new Woolworths floor area. Our base preparation for this area had to be carefully planned and meticulous with a tolerance of +0 / -10mm.
Backfilling Retaining Walls:
- Kalkan backfilled over 100m of sleeper retaining wall 4m high in a controlled method along a busy Wellington Road. The backfilling process was carefully executed to ensure no structural damage occurred to retaining wall and also our site personnel were working in a safe method
Road Construction:
- Kalkan had the task of construction over 400 metres of road with several entry points in manner that was not going to affect other trades onsite. We carried out the tasks by staging the entrance points and ensuring clear and concise communication was carried out through-out the process
Carparks:
- Kalkan was heading into winter whilst constructing civil earthworks in Mt Barker. We had the task of building 13,000m2 carpark in a limited time frame. Our objective was to complete these carparks the time frame allocated.
Challenges and Solutions:
- Final trimming Woolworths Floor Area whilst roof was being installed and in around columns was definitely a challenge, for this purpose we manufactured a grader blade on 3.5 tonne excavator to sweep in around the columns whilst working under other trades installing roofing system.
- Carrying out civil earthworks in Mt Barker is always a challenge, carrying out these works in winter and in Mt Barker is a greater challenge. Kalkan understands that the weather can be unpredictable at best of times, therefore whilst targeting the 13,000m2 carpark we decided to breakdown the carpark to roughly 3500m2 allotments which would assist us in limiting the ground to latent weather conditions.
Conclusion
Kalkan’s contribution to the Mt Barker South Woolworths $1.2 million project showcased their precision, adaptability, and commitment to safety. They successfully prepared the Woolworths floor area to a tight tolerance, backfilled retaining walls on Wellington Road with care, and efficiently constructed roads and carparks. Their innovative solutions and meticulous planning enabled them to overcome challenges, demonstrating their expertise in civil engineering.
