Project Overview:
- Demolition of existing welding bays
- Demolition of industrial machine rooms including suspended slabs over 1.8m voids
- Strip out of existing rooms, walls, ceiling, cladding, carpet, tiles and vinyl
- Demolition of existing asphalt courtyard
- Excavation and construction of new 2m deep stormwater infrastructure
- Excavation and installation of underground stormwater detention tank
- Excavation and preparation of new raft slab within courtyard between 2 buildings
- Detailed excavation of footings for new raft slab
Scope of Work:
Demolition:
- Kalkan first demolished the existing welding bays, internal and external slabs, walls, and ceilings. Heavy machinery was used for the demolition, and safety and neighboring property disruption were taken into account.
- See above suspended slab works in machine room
Ground Preparation:
- Kalkan then trimmed and compacted the subgrades to meet AS3798 standards, excavated the ground for footings, and prepared pads for new raft slabs within the courtyard.
Raft Slab Construction:
- Kalkan constructed new raft slabs on top of the prepared pads. – We just prepared the base and dug the footings, concrete slab by others
Footing Construction:
- Kalkan excavated footings in the areas where new structures were to be built.
Stormwater Infrastructure:
- Kalkan installed a new stormwater system, which included excavating and installing two 3 tonne x 2m deep concrete pits to collect and store rainwater. The stormwater line was also constructed to carry rainwater away from the site. Excavation and installation of underground stormwater detention tank
Challenges and Solutions:
- Working in a live school with students present, noise, vibration, traffic control
- Working in a courtyard between 2 buildings
- Demolition of suspended slabs and beams over 1.8m voids had to be meticulous in machine, definitely the greatest challenge working in an enclosed room (with students next door) jack hammering and smashing our slabs and beams with extraction fans and CO2 monitors on a ‘suspended’ slab with 1.6T mini excavator
Conclusion
In this complex project, our team faced the challenge of demolishing various structures while the school was still up and running. We carefully took apart suspended floors and beams over open spaces, making sure to follow strict safety rules like controlling noise and managing vibrations. This showed how dedicated we are to doing great technical work while also keeping the students safe and comfortable. Working right in the middle of an active school required a lot of careful planning, and we did a really good job at it. From taking apart things with lots of details to getting the ground ready and building new structures, we demonstrated our expertise in getting impressive results while also making safety and efficiency a top priority.
